Visitor arrivals and spending continued to trend upward in Toronto in 2012 led by sustained growth in U.S. and international travelers. In the face of continued headwinds, hotel performance remained steady for the year, highlighted by the following key statistics:
  • An approximate 1% increase in total room nights sold saw the Toronto region surpass the 9-million-room-nights plateau for the second year in a row
  • Hotel occupancy was 67.6%, placing Toronto 11th among the top 28 North American cities
  • The average daily room rate was $137.18 which ranked 8th out of the 28 cities and shows Toronto continues both to be in high demand among travellers and adapt to the new economic realities of a neutral exchange rate.

Getting Away to Toronto, an editorial division of the popular travel site, recently published its “2013 Operation Vacation” and Toronto is among the editors’ picks. The idea of the feature is to inspire readers to use their vacation days in 2013 with trips that range from two-day getaways to ten-day once-in-a-lifetime adventures. receives 1 million monthly visitors to its site.

Going behind the Wall
The Chinese version of Tourism Toronto’s website is now being hosted in China. The significance of moving behind “the great firewall” is that Chinese residents will get more direct access and faster response times from the site, enabling them to research and book Toronto as a destination with more ease. The new site will enhance our continuing media relations efforts and partnerships with Chinese travel trade companies that feature Toronto in their package sales offerings.

The move is a culmination of a year-long project to upgrade our international websites - French, Korean, Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, Italian and German - with enhanced information on Toronto as a destination, our major attractions, festivals and events. In addition, a French Canadian site has been created that is distinct from our international French site, and includes more detailed planning information that is appropriate for our growing Quebec audience.

National Tour Association
A representative from TT’s International Leisure Trade Sales team, together with 7 member companies, was in Orlando, Florida, January 20 -24, to attend the National Tour Association Convention Marketplace. This annual trade event brings tour operators from across the U.S. and Canada for timed appointments with suppliers. During the marketplace session, staff met with 34 trade clients focused on FIT, student, senior and adult group travel and is following up with leads for 2013 business opportunities.

NY Post
On the heels of a December 2012 press visit, the New York Post took a wide-ranging look at the city in “Toronto is in the groove.” Highlighting everything from skating on the Natrel Rink at Harbourfront to an art tour on Queen West the piece online and in print reached over 3 million readers.

Brazilian coverage
Articles in Brazilian publications resulting from two separate press trips hosted by TT’s Media Relations team emerged in December. First was a piece showcasing cosmopolitan Toronto in Correio do Povo newspaper, which is the leading daily newspaper in southern Brazil with a circulation of 150,000 daily.

Also the travel/food/wine editor with O Globo newspaper concentrated on ice wine for his latest piece on the Toronto region. O Globo is based in Rio de Janeiro with distribution throughout the country of 500,000.

Philadelphia Gay News
TT hosted a travel writer from the Philadelphia Gay News before the holidays which resulted in “In winter, Toronto is a wonderland.” Reaching the important LGBT readership in the Philadelphia area, The Philadelphia Gay News is a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 15,000.

MTCC at forefront of digital events
The Metro Toronto Convention Centre has been designated a verified Digital Event Center™ by The Virtual Edge Institute®. The first in Canada, the designation recognizes that an organization is “dedicated to advancing engagement around events, meetings, learning and marketing programs through technology and best practices.” The initiative is “one more way we are demonstrating our commitment to helping our customers produce successful events,” said Barry Smith, President & CEO, Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
