As Toronto’s U.S. visitor market has increasingly shifted from visitors arriving by auto to visitors arriving by air, the number of nonstop flights from major U.S. cities has increased significantly. This upward trend is clearly illustrated in the chart below.
Toronto named top destination for 2013
Conde Nast Traveler magazine, one of the travel industry’s most respected publications, announced its “Best Places to Go in 2013” earlier this month and Toronto was among the select group of five destinations in the world. This “hot list” was also featured during a travel segment on the Today Show, broadcast throughout the U.S. on NBC. The Today Show boasts of a daily audience of just over 3 million viewers and Conde Nast Traveler has a paid circulation of just under 800,000 subscribers world-wide and digital circulation of 500,000.

PCMA brings major convention win for 2016
More than 4,000 meeting planners and supplier partners converged on Orlando, Florida for the annual meeting of the Professional Convention Management Association last week. Tourism Toronto’s sales team met, greeted and networked its way through four days of education sessions and evenings of experiential learning and was a major presence on the tradeshow floor with its signature Imaginarium hospitality suite. While there, the team was able to confirm its first major convention win of the year. The Alzheimer's Association has selected Toronto, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and participating hotel partners’ collective bid for its 2016 International Conference, bringing with it an anticipated attendance of 6,000 delegates from around the world and generating over 8,500 room-nights for our host hotels.

Holiday campaign successful in lifting out-of-town visits
TT’s Torontoland campaign ended on December 31 after a two-month run. The goal was to inspire and motivate visitors to experience Toronto in November, December and early January, and targeted consumers across Southern Ontario with radio, outdoor displays (strategically-placed fiberglass snowmen), online ads and a strong search engine program. On TT’s holiday-oriented website, content focused on couple, family and girlfriend weekends with itineraries, events and packages.

Results were positive as the campaign generated:
  • 174,691 website visits and 36,993 visits into the online reservation system
  • Hotel occupancy for four key weekends – Nov 23/24; Nov 30/Dec 1; Dec 7/8 and Dec 14/15 - saw a rise of 13.3% over last year
Winterlicious draws Los Angelinos’ attention
The LA Times online travel section ran an item all about Toronto’s fave frosty food festival in “Get ready to sample Toronto's cuisine at Winterlicious.” is the #1 site for local news, information and lifestyle in the Los Angeles market, with 14 million unique visitors a month.

Where the rubber meets the road
TT's International Leisure Trade Sales team, along with 10 member companies, was in North Carolina January 6-10, for the American Bus Association Convention Marketplace. This annual trade event brings motor coach and tour operators from across the U.S. and Canada, for timed appointments with suppliers. During the marketplace session, staff met with 44 trade clients focused on student, senior and adult group travel and is following up with leads for 2013-14 business opportunities.

Mississauga and Brampton featured for Francophones
A Montreal-based journalist hosted by TT’s Media Relations team has filed stories focusing on the western regions of the GTA for two French-language publications L’Express and Le Devoir. Combined the two publications have a reach of approximately 110,000.

Argentinians see range of Toronto charms
Two significant business and financial publications based in Buenos Aires featured Toronto in their December 2012 issues as a result of a press tour last year. Bank Magazine and Clase Ejecutiva ran multiple-page spreads with a thorough look at Toronto. In addition, Travel Box, a lifestyle and tourism magazine, produced a golf-oriented piece for its 14,000 upscale readers monthly.

Buffalo families urged to roam to Toronto
The Buffalo News ran a great roundup of some of the city’s cultural attractions on December 9. The online and print piece entitled “One-tank trip: Take the kids to
” includes Casa Loma, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Bata Shoe Museum plus much more. Buffalo News has a print circulation of over 200,000.

Going Tete-a-Tete
On January 31, Tourism Toronto will join forces alongside 16 members in Ottawa to represent Toronto at this year’s CSAE Tete-a-Tete Tradeshow. With 500 delegates expected to walk the floor, this is one of the best shows of the year for the Canadian association market. This year, TT will be teaming with the Children’s Hospital and encouraging clients to join in on writing notes to hospitalized children along with gift bags, donated by TT.
